Restful sleep blend tea
I am in a season of life where sleep can be elusive. I try not to make it a big deal if I don’t get my 8 hours, however, I do prefer a sound sleep. This means that I do my best not be on any screens after 7pm. I do not consume any kind of caffeine after noon. I try to set myself up for the best chance of a long, dreamy sleep.
This past week I have been brewing up a pot of Restful Sleep Blend crafted by a friend of mine on Quadra Island.* She describes her tea as “a soothing lullaby of sleepy herbs to ease tension and relax thoughts in preparation for sleep…” Yes, please! Sign me up.
She uses a mix of organic, wildcrafted, and locally grown plants including Oat Straw, Lemon Balm, Chamomile, Wild Rose, and Lavender.
Oat Straw: contains magnesium & calcium - both known for producing the sleep hormone, melatonin. It also increases alpha brain waves, boosting relaxation and promoting sleep.
Lemon Balm: has a compound called rosmarinic acid which is thought to improve sleep in folks with insomnia. It is also a nervine (used to calm the nerves).
Chamomile: has a mild sedative effect that greatly helps with inducing sleep.
Wild Rose: petals have a relaxing effect, helping to lower stress levels and encourage sleep.
Lavender: research suggests that the calming fragrance of lavender promotes better sleep.
Play with any combination of these herbs and find which works best for your cuppa before bed. Sweet dreams!
